Abstract
Objectives : A community-based survey was conducted to identify lifestyle factors related to menopausal symptoms and management of middle-aged women in rural area.

Methods : The study subjects included 504 women aged 40-64 years in Gurae Gun, Chonnam Province. The instruments used in this survey were the menopause-specific quality of life (MENQOL) developed by Hilditch et al and the menopause management scale by Song. The data were collected by the face to face interview with a questionnaire from November to December 1999.

Results : The prevalence of menopausal symptoms was 69.2% in hot flashes, 88.3% in forgetfulness, 88.6% in stiffness or soreness of joint, and 61.0% in vaginal dryness. The vasomotor changes were significantly associated with age and self-perceived health, the psycosocial changes with age, marital state, educational level, self-perceived health and dietary habit, and the physical changes with age, educational level, body mass index and health examination. Also the sexual activity changes were significantly associated with age, educational level and exercise. Dietary habit was associated with physical activity and professional health maintenance among the categories of menopausal management. Also exercise was associated with physical activity, sexual life and professional health maintenance and self control. Smoking was associated with sexual life and self control, but alcohol drinking was not associated with any categories of menopausal management.

Conclusion : This results suggest that lifestyle and socioeconomic status affect climacteric symptoms or management of this age group in rural area.
